Song of the Day: Young Marble Giants - N.I.T.A.

Isn't it nice that Young Marble Giants once existed? I think so.

PS. here is a video of some clouds.

Song of the Day: In The New Jerusalem - Gloria Bailey

I really wish I knew more about this, it is absolutely the jam today (and nicely ties together the musical strains I've been digging on lately). In other news I hate myself.

I got this sick Mississippi Records release "In the Storm So Long" for my birthday, which led me to look for some 70s Gospel songs on youtube, which leads us here. I'm sure this could be easily figured out, but I am a lazy man.

song of the Day: Suffering Season - Woods

Woods are, I think, one of the best bands of the last few years. About a year ago I was in Barcelona and it was raining late at night and i walked to the beach and back listening to this album. they have a new one coming out, which is good news for everyone.

Song of the Day: Bo Diddley - Love Me

I did not know that Bo Diddley sounded like this sometimes. This is a good thing to know

Song of the Day: Sandy Denny - By The Time It Get Backs Dark

This is a hard to beat song. I'm sorry I'm not more eloquent. Bonus completely great Yo La Tengo cover here (this is how I, and probably a lot of people, learned this song existed).

update: or perhaps you need some cheesy extra instrumentation with your Sandy Denny

Song of the Day: Alton Ellis and the Flames - Why Birds Follow Spring

Somewhere down the line this Reggae got really annoying, but man Alton Ellis is the best.

Side note: I don't know if you've heard the news but the Mississippi Records Tape Series is great. (this one especially, but not really especially because they are all fantastic.)

Also also: Here is some more Alton Ellis for you, because he is great (see above).

Song of the Day: Chapterhouse - Breather

The 90s were a thing that happened this one time.

Song of the Day: The Copper Family - Babes in the Wood

Just you wait this sort of traditional old man folk music is totally going to be the next hipster sensation.

Mississippi Tape Series: Everything Crash

The fog is coming back in, but I suspect that pretty soon (and currently, perhaps, in other places) it will be hot and sunny out. When that happens I'll be prepared with this Mississippi Records Tape Series volume on early Jamaican Ska, RB, and Soul. (via Root Strata.)

Song of the Day: Brenda Lee - Rock the Bop

I've been old enough to chicken for a while, and I'm hoping that this year I'll finally be old enough to rock the bop.

Song of the Day: The Good Ones - Sara

This song is perfect today. Also the youtube page featres a weird rant against Rammstein in the comments. Thank you internet. Download the album via Weird Brother.

Song of the Day: Smahila & the SB's - Plan With God

Great Nigerian Afrobeat. Youtube recommended videos can turn the internet into quite the wormhole.

Hugh Masekela Understands what is happening

Can we discuss this for a moment? This video is sort of incredible.

Hugh Masekela's stuff can get a bit too cheesy/80s synth-happy (see above), but man he is one rad dude. Here is his (rightfully?) best known track, grazing in the grass. It is pretty unimpeachable. Unimpeachable is the word of the day.

Recently doing a search for some highlife compilations I came upon this album from 1971 under the name Hugh Masekela and the Union of South Africa. I don't actually know anything about it. It is wonderful.

Song of the Day: The Staple Singers - Uncloudy Day

The Staples were a pretty great looking family/band. You know?

Incidentally, If you are in need of some great Gospel, perhaps you should check out this vinyl rip of the Motown "Shades of Gospel Soul" compilation courtesy of Ghostcaptial. And by perhaps I mean absolutely.
