Song of the Day: Celia Cruz - Quimbara

Last night I couldn't sleep and ended up downloading Salsa albums until I passed out again. The highlight of these, from the Global Groove blog, is Super Salsa Singers Volume 1, which happens to feature the best album cover of all time. Thank you insomnia!

Song of the Day: Lost Wisdom - Mount Eerie and Julie Doiron

All in all I think that Phil Elvrum's post Microphones output has been really incredible live and sort of lacking recorded, but I'm pretty sure his mini-album with Julie Doiron, Lost Wisdom, is one of the best records of the last few years. This is a thing I think.

Song of the Day: Yohuna - Mateo

Researching bands from the Southwest for The Yellow Dress's upcoming tour, I stumbled on this gem. Way to go New Mexico!

Song of the Day: Otis Wright - It Soon Be Done

Super catchy Jamaican gospel music. The Noah Found Grace compilation was what I was actually looking for yesterday. Highly highly (highly) recommended.

Song of the Day: Burl Ives - Noah Found Grace

This really wasn't what I was looking for today. But I love Burl's awkward swaying. Also why aren't people named Burls anymore?

Reverend Louis Overstreet - An Evening With His Guitar, Four Sons, & The Congregation of St Luke Powerhouse Church of God 1962

Without a doubt the best album I've heard in the last two weeks (though I like that new Cults album too). Sometimes I actively seek out new genres of music to get into, sometimes it just happens. I had no idea I was going down a Gospel road a month or two ago, but man this stuff is good for you. I wonder how I would feel about music like this if I'd grown up in any sort of religious environment and wasn't coming to this as a cultural tourist. All I know is that this is great. Raw electric gospel. Get it here via holywarbles.

Song of the Day: Willis Alan Ramsey - Ballad of Spider John

Sometimes you need stuff like this on overcast Sundays. you know? via holywarbles.
